Happy Bookmas Day Ten! I can’t believe how fast Bookmas is flying by—it’s crazy! In this post, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite book covers of 2024. As you might know by now, I’m a huge cover buyer, so if I see a beautiful book, chances are I’m going to buy it. Whether I actually read it is another story. Cozy Christmas | Book Tag

Hi Friends,
Happy Bookmas Day Eight! Today, I thought it would be fun to do the Cozy Christmas book tag. I believe this tag was created by a YouTuber, but I’m unsure who the original creator is. The tag features some fun holiday-themed bookish questions, and I had such a great time answering them.

I own many books that I personally think are beautiful, but right now, The Stars Are Dying by Chloe C. Peñaranda— a recent addition to my collection— has to be the prettiest. The crazy thing is that it isn’t even a special edition, so it wasn’t too expensive. Yet, it’s absolutely stunning!

Yes! I will 100% pay (probably too much) to get a gorgeous copy of a book I love or think I’m going to give 5 stars.

I decided to fully embrace the Christmas spirit and create a red-and-green book stack!

I have to go with Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Not only does it perfectly embody everything about the holidays, but it’s also my all-time favorite story.

This year, my longest read was Eclipse, the third book in the Twilight saga. I tend to stay away from longer books because they intimidate me. However, being in my romantasy era has made reading longer books feel like a bit of a requirement!

Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion. Reading is subjective, and so is cover artwork— we all have our own likes and dislikes. For this, I’m picking a series I read this year, The Chestnut Springs series by Elsie Silver. I own all the traditionally published editions, but I don’t like the covers at all. I think the ones with actual people on them are my favorite, which I know that’s an unpopular opinion!

For this question, I’m going with a holiday horror novella I read last year called Secret Santa. It was my first-ever holiday horror book. It’s kind of cheesy, but still a fun, dark story set at Christmas.

Besides my favorite book (see question 4), which I reread every year, I’d say The Afterlife of Holly Chase. It’s a Christmas Carol retelling (no shocker there), and such a good YA spin on the classic story. I’ve been rereading it during the holiday season for the past few years, and the ending always warms my heart.

Books I Couldn’t Finish | 2024 DNFs

Hi Friends,
Happy Bookmas Day Seven! I can’t believe we’re already a week into Bookmas. Today, I’m talking about the books I DNFed this year. Honestly, I didn’t DNF many books this year, which I’m very happy about! Still, there were a few that I just couldn’t get through.


Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner
I got about halfway through this book before I had to stop reading. It’s an adult queer romance where a divorced woman falls for one of her daughter’s college friends. The plot sounded interesting, but I wasn’t a fan of the characters. Also, the way they both handled the situation wasn’t great. Both the friend and the mom seemed to show little care for how the daughter might feel about their relationship.


Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica
This is a mystery thriller that I’ve heard nothing but good things about. However, I didn’t know before starting it that it comes with a trigger warning for child abuse. Let me just say—that’s a hard no for me. I can handle mentions, but I can’t deal with scenes where it’s described or a central part of the story. Unfortunately, the first few chapters were just too much for me, and I had to DNF for that reason alone.


Never by Jessa Hastings
I’ll be completely honest—this was a cover buy. Let me keep this short and to the point: the chapters were too long, the story was boring, and I was totally wrong in thinking this book would be spicy. Also, I hate Peter Pan, so why I thought I’d enjoy a retelling is beyond me!


A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft
I had such high hopes for this book because it sounded so good. But calling it a romantasy is a bit of a stretch. I would categorize it as a fantasy with some mystery thrown in. I got 40% in and was still waiting for the romance. Unfortunately, the mystery wasn’t compelling, and the story as a whole just didn’t hold my interest.


The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
This one hurt to DNF because it’s so popular. However, I felt like the story dragged and just wasn’t capturing my attention. I was going to push through it, but that plan went out the window when the main character’s jerk of an ex referred to her as “Bunny.” Maybe hearing it once would’ve been okay, but every time she thought of him, that nickname came up. I couldn’t handle it—for obvious reasons (my amazing husband calls me Bunny, hence Book With Bunny).

Leaving Goodreads In 2025!

Hi Friends,
Happy Bookmas Day Six! Today, I’ll be sharing why I’m officially leaving Goodreads in 2025—or at least, mostly leaving. There are several reasons behind my decision to step away from the popular reading tracker and personal library site, but here are the main ones.

Amazon
I don’t love that Goodreads is owned by Amazon. There’s so much about the company that I don’t agree with. While I can’t completely cut ties with Amazon (it’s often the only viable option for many indie authors), this felt like one small way for me to show less support for the company.

Outdated Features
Compared to other book-tracking platforms, Goodreads feels outdated. Its interface looks clunky, and the features are limited. Forums aren’t widely utilized, the giveaways don’t appeal to me, and aside from adding books to your shelves and tracking your reading, there’s not much else to do. It just doesn’t feel engaging.

Recommendations
I’ve found Goodreads’ recommendations underwhelming and heavily skewed toward popular titles. Their “Most Read” lists and personalized recommendations almost always spotlight the same mainstream books. And don’t even get me started on the Goodreads Choice Awards! It’s purely a popularity contest. I’ve even heard some readers speculate that publishers pay to get their books nominated. Some winners and nominees just don’t make sense to me.


So, what’s next? Moving forward, I’ll be using StoryGraph to track my reading—and I’ve been loving it so far! Not only is it women-owned, but it also offers so many fantastic features. You can still set a reading goal and join an interactive challenges. Plus, when you add a book, you can mark whether or not you own it. One of my favorite features is half-star ratings, which Goodreads still doesn’t support.

StoryGraph also provides amazing stats, like your most-read authors and fun pie charts about your reading habits. The only downside is that its database isn’t as extensive as Goodreads’. That said, I haven’t run into a single book I couldn’t find yet!

The January Book Tag // 2024

Hi Friends,
Today, I am doing ‘The January’ book tag, which I have done previously. This book tag helps you reflect on your last year’s reading and your reading plans for the year ahead. I am happy to continue my tradition of doing this tag every January.


Funny enough, I remember many, if not all, of my January reading in 2023. The book that I started the year reading was ‘Five Survive’ by Holly Jackson, who is the author of the ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder‘ trilogy. For some reason, I could not remember the last book I read. Let me say that it was a crazy end of the year. After looking at my GoodReads I saw that my final read of 2023 was ‘Secret Santa’ by Andrew Shaffer, which is a short Christmas horror.

In 2024, the first book I ended up finishing was actually one I started in 2023, which was ‘Lovelight Farms’ by B.K. Borison. I had initially DNFed the book but decided to go ahead and finish it on January 1st. I probably will not be posting my review until November or December of this year, but spoiler alert I was not a fan of it.


I have a whole post on my 2024 reading goals, but my top three are to read my owned TBR, read outside my comfort zone, and one that I did not mention in that post is to finish a few book series. I think that these goals are typical and that I can accomplish them.

Well, I just so happen to also have a post on my most anticipated releases for the first half of 2024. But, my three most anticipated releases for the entire year would have to be ‘Happily Never After’ by Lynn Painter (March 2024), ‘Wisteria’ by Adalyn Grace (August 2024) and ‘Spectacular’ by Stephanie Garber (October 2024). These are all favorite authors of mine, so naturally, I cannot wait to read their new releases.

I reached my reading goal last year, which I believe is always an accomplishment. Unfortunately, I did not read much of my physical TBR. However, graphic novels were a pretty big part of my reading last year, and I do not normally read them, so I would call reading out of my comfort zone a success.


Honestly, the first book that came to mind was ‘House of Flame and Shadow’ by Sarah J. Maas (January 2024), which is the third book in her ‘Crescent City’ series. I have no desire to read the book, or anything else written by the author. Her books seem so long, and there are #7 or #8 books in some of her series. This is just too much for me. Needless to say, I will not pick this book up when it is released, and I am okay with that.


I am not sure if I have any reading habits or red flags so to speak that I would like to change this year. I know that is such a lame answer, and I think it’s one I have given in the past to this question. I try not to take reading too seriously because it is some I love to do and makes me happy.


I am not ashamed to admit that I do not keep up with book adaptations. So, I have no idea what is being adapted in 2024. Except for ‘It Ends With Us,’ which will star Blake Lively. However, I am not necessarily excited about that since I probably will not be watching it, because I have never read the book and do not plan to.


Probably joining Bookthreads! I have become so active there and Bookstagram. It has been so fun, and I am glad I discovered it last year. I hope to connect with more bookish people this year and do more buddy reading.


If you are talking about books, I started last year and still need to finish that would be ‘Furyborn’ by Claire Legrand and ‘Book Lovers’ by Emily Henry. But, if you mean 2023 releases I still need to read than the list is probably too long to mention.

The Valentine’s Day Book Tag

Hi Friends,
I know that I’m a day late, but in honor of Valentine’s Day I wanted to do a V-Day inspired book tag. This one was created by Epic Reads on YouTube. I found it to be the perfect a short and sweet book tag.

First Book Crush?
My first book crust was probably Holden Caulfield from ‘The Catcher In The Rye’. He was just broody, with a lot of issues. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a damaged guy that I can help heal. Also, he reminded me a lot of my husband (I have a type, I guess?), so that could be another reason that I fell for him.

What book would you want as your Valentine?
I haven’t read this book in years, but I’m going with ‘Anna and the French Kiss’ by Stephanie Perkins. All I remember is that this is a cute YA contemporary that takes place in Paris. I know that I loved romance and characters in the book. Honestly, I need to give it a reread.

Candy Hearts or Chocolate?
Probably chocolate! But, I would pick Nerds gummy clusters over either of these. I’m a for sure a gummy candy kind of girl. Still, I can appreciate a good piece of chocolate every now and again. Especially on Valentine’s Day.

What book would you gift to your true love?
I’m actually gifting a book to my hubby this Valentine’s Day. The book is ‘Warcross’ by Marie Lu, because I think it’s a book he’d really enjoy. However, another book I’d gift to my love would be ‘Five Feet Apart’ by Mikki Daughtry, Rachael Lippincott, and Tobias Iaconis, since it’s a beautiful star-crossed lovers type story.

Favorite Rom-com?
I have way too many to name, but my top five (yes five), are probably ‘The DUFF’, ‘He’s Just Not That Into To You’, ‘A Cinderella Story’, ‘13 Going On 30’, and ‘Valentine’s Day’. But, the list could seriously go on. Out of all of them I’d have to say that ‘A Cinderella Story’ is my favorite.

Best Valentine’s Day gift you ever received (or want to receive)?
The best I’ve ever received was a Bunny bookmark made by my amazing husband. He’s such a sweetheart. Honestly, my favorite gift is a sweet little note written for me by my love. I’m so cheesy, and I embrace that fact.

Favorite thing about Valentine’s Day (if you love it) OR favorite thing to do on Valentine’s Day (if you hate it)?
I really don’t mind Valentine’s Day, because with life being so hectic, we sometimes forget to show our love. It gives us the opportunity to take a day to just share our appreciation for our loved ones, whether that be a spouse, partner, parent, sibling, or even friend. I think people have gotten this misconception that the holiday is only for couples, but really it’s about spreading and sharing love. And, that doesn’t solely apply to couples. Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

My favorite thing to do on Valentine’s Day is to get all cozy in bed, with my husband, and watch a bunch of rom-coms, and read a YA contemporary.

This is a YA mystery that I’m 50% into. I’m pretty confident that I can finish it before the weekends over.

Furyborn by Claire Legrand
I’m like 3% in this book and probably won’t finish it this weekend. But, I’m hoping to make a good dent in it.

Jo & Laurie by Margaret Stohl and Melissa de la Cruz
Now, I haven’t even started this book, however if all goes as planned I will pick it up this weekend. It seems like a book that I can finish in a day, which is great.

5 Star Predictions #4 // 2023

Hi Friends,
I can’t remember the last time I did a 5 star predictions post, so I thought it was about time for one. These are some books that I think I’m going to love (if I ever get around to reading them). Honestly, I’m not sure how good I am at reading my 5 star predictions. I have 6 books on this list, with 3 of them being older titles, and 3 of them being new releases.

The Headmaster’s List by Melissa de la Cruz
This book is being released at the end of February and is Melissa de la Cruz first YA thriller. It is compared to ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’, but it’s also giving me ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ vibes. I’m a fan of all three of those, so I know this is going to be an amazing read. I’ll be surprised if this isn’t a 5 star read.

Seven Percent of Ro Devereux by Ellen O’Clover
In this YA contemporary, coming out in May, we get a fake dating meets ex-best friends to lovers story. I haven’t really read many ex-best friends second chance romance books, but that probably because friends-to-lovers and second chance romances aren’t my favorite tropes. Still, I love fake dating and the fact that the story has to do with a MASH inspired app sounds amazing. If the story is done right and as cute as I’m thinking it will be then it will for sure be a 5 star book.

One Of Us Is Back by Karen M. McManus
This book will be released in August and I can not wait! Honestly, I’d love to have an ARC of the audiobook right now. This is the conclusion to her ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ series, which I loved. I did only give book one and two 4 stars, but I have high hopes this one will be a 5 star read.

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
I don’t know much about this story, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a slow paced story. And, that the writing will be very lyrical. Does that make any sense? I’m not sure why I’m thinking this will be a 5 star read, but something is telling me that I’m really going to enjoy this story.

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White
I’m a big fan of Kiersten White’s writing style. There’s just something about her books that draw me in. I’ve been wanting to pick this book up for a long time now and just love the idea behind it. It’s King Arthur fantasy retelling, which doesn’t seem like something I’d typically gravitate to, but I think Kiersten White’s storytelling will make this a 5 star book.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
I’ve actually started this book already, but haven’t gotten that far into it. I feel like if I really dedicate some time to it, I’d love the story. It’s a heartbreaking YA Contemporary about a boy with bipolar disorder and a girl dealing with the loss of her sister. Heartbreaking contemporaries usually get 5 stars from me.
