My Rating

I’m not exactly sure how to categorize this book, because it doesn’t really fall into the thriller category, but it wasn’t a very compelling mystery. Throughout the story, we follow four women’s different perspectives, all of which are connected. There’s the mystery of a missing baby from years ago, and a present day murder – all taking place around Mother’s Day.

Each woman had a very distinctive voice, but none of their perspectives really captivated me. Also, I didn’t find any of the characters in this book particularly likable, which isn’t a good thing, since you have to be somewhat invested in the characters you’re reading about.

Unfortunately, the plot also fell flat for me. Although there were two ‘sort of’ mysteries going on throughout the book, I wasn’t gripped by the story. I want there to be more twists and turns and shocking moments that I didn’t see coming, however, I completely figured out where the book was going from pretty early on. This book didn’t have any plot twists, which I think are an essential part of a good mystery/thriller.

“Everybody has a mother, but not everybody has a mother’s love.”

As for the writing, Alice Feeney is a great author! Although the storyline wasn’t for me, I still wanted to keep reading. I attribute my inability to put the book down to her fantastic writing style. Her books are fairly easy to read, and bingeable too. I read this book in about a day, and I could see others doing the same.

Overall, I didn’t hate the book, but it’s nothing to write home about. I would not recommend it to someone searching for a fast-paced and exciting mystery. One thing to know – motherhood is a big factor in this book, so maybe I would’ve had more of a connection to the story if I was a mother, but all in all, I don’t think you’re missing out on anything if you choose not to read the book.

My Rating

This book dives deep into truth, morality, and self-discovery, but in a way that really grabs you. We follow our main character as she tries to untangle a mess of lies and deceit. The characters within are not just black and white; they’re morally grey, which adds a whole new layer to the story, and makes you question everything.

It’s a perfect mix of gripping plot twists and characters you can’t help but care about. While some parts might seem predictable, the suspense keeps you flipping the pages. It’s not exactly a thriller, but it sure keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Ashley Elston’s storytelling is so vivid that you can easily picture this book on the big screen. Just a heads up, though – it takes a bit to really get going. But once you push through that first chunk, you’re in for a wild ride.

“Mama always said to be successful in life you need to do three things: learn everything you can, try your hardest, and be the best at what you do.”

The book was very entertaining, and I had fun trying to figure out how things were going to end. Speaking of the ending, I didn’t expect things to turn out the way they did, but I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story played out. Being inside these characters’ heads was great, and the plot was very well executed.

Overall, the book didn’t make Elston a new favorite thriller author of mine, but it definitely showed that she has incredible talent. While everyone might not vibe with the pacing, or level of action, I think the book is worth the read. Who knows, you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised.

March 2024 // Reading Wrap Up

Hi Friends,
March has officially ended, so now it is time for my March reading wrap up. I’m surprised that I was able to read 12 books in the month of March, considering that I was in a huge reading slump for a big part of the month. But, I was able to catch up on my reading goal, which makes me so happy.


Ruthless Vows (Letters of Enchantment, 2) by Rebecca Ross
This was probably my favorite read of the month, and the conclusion of an amazing duology. I can say much about it without spoilers, but it was a satisfying ending.

In the Weeds (Lovelight 2) by B.K. Borison
This is the second book in a romance series of interconnected standalones. They take place in the small town of Lovelight, but mainly on this Christmas tree farm in the town. This one was a second chance romance between a farmer from that farm, and an influencer.

The Naturals (The Naturals, 1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I think BookTok is the major contributor to the sudden success of this series. This is the first book in a series that follows a bunch of teenagers with unique skills, being recruited by the FBI to solve cold cases. And from this first book, I can see why everyone loves this series.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
This is a somewhat of a psychological thriller about a therapist working at a psychiatric clinic to get close to a woman that was convicted of killing her husband, but hasn’t spoken in years. Lots of twists and turns, but the ending was quite predictable.


Brutal Obsession by S. Massery
This is a dark hockey romance, the first in an interconnected, standalone series. This book was very intense, and a dark Romance for sure. Not exactly sure how I feel about it but I do really enjoy these books.

Killer Instinct (The Naturals, 2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
This is the second book in the ‘Naturals’ series, and again, it follows the exact same formula of the first book. We are following the same group of teenagers working for the FBI trying to stop another serial killer. Super fast-paced, and a good read.

Where Darkness Blooms by Andrea Hannah
This is a young adult contemporary thriller, where we follow four girls, whose mothers mysteriously disappeared one day. The story was definitely a roller coaster, and it was interesting to get the perspectives of all four girls throughout the book.

She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen
This is a young adult queer romance that is part enemies to lovers, part opposites attract. Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this book, because it doesn’t really stick out in my mind.


How to Plot a Payback by Melissa Ferguson
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of the audiobook through NetGalley. I am so happy that I got the chance to read this book because it took me completely by surprise. It was such a fantastic read.

The Nowhere Girls (Detective Nikki Cassidy) by Dana Perry
This is another book that I received the audiobook ARC via NetGalley. If you’re a fan of Law and Order: SVU, then I think you’d really enjoy this book. Apparently it’s part of a series that follows different FBI agents. In this book, we follow Detective Nikki Cassidy, who returns home to get answers from the man who murdered her 12 year old sister. But when he confesses that he didn’t murder her sister, Nikki starts to wonder if her sister’s killer is still out there.

What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
Yes, this is actually on my April TBR, but I went ahead and read it early. This is an adult mystery/thriller, where our main character, Naomi, is trying to put together the pieces of what really happened when she was attacked at 11 years old. Super quick read, in my opinion, but I unfortunately didn’t love it as much as I thought I would.

Happily Never After by Lynn Painter
I’ve heard so many people talk about wanting to read this book, but nobody actually reviewing it. She wrote my all-time favorite young adult, contemporary romance ‘Better Than The Movies’. This, however, is an adult romance; and sadly, I didn’t love it. But it’s Lynn Painter, so I still recommend the book.

March 2024 // To Be Read

Hi Friends,
Today is another TBR post. This is going to be my monthly TBR. Usually, I will play my Bookopoly game, but I decided that I am going to start switching up how I pick my TBR each month. This month I chose to use a prompt spinner wheel to help me pick the books this month. I used a random number generator to see how many spins I was going to do and got 10, so this TBR is a bit much considering all the readathons I’m participating in.


I’m very excited that my first prompt was a seasonal read. Since spring starts at the end of March, I’m putting a spring read on my TBR. That book is going to be ‘In The Weeds’ by B.K. Borison. Honestly, I don’t have high hopes for this book, like at all. It just happens to be my least favorite trope – second chance romance. But if I don’t just put it on a TBR, I may never read it.


The second prompt was a book that ends on an even number of pages. I am, once again, putting ‘Ruthless Vows’ by Rebecca Ross on my TBR. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to it in February, but I am dying to see how this duology ends.


My third prompt was a low star prediction, which is more of a punishment prompt, but that’s okay . I picked ‘Liar’s Beach’ by Katie Cotugno. This is a young adult mystery, and an Agatha Christie retelling. I’ve only read one other book by this author, which I didn’t enjoy. I hope that this book is slightly better.

The fourth spin’s prompt was a book under 250 pages. I am happy about this, because it means I get to add a short book to my TBR. However, I don’t own many short books. That means that I’ll be picking a graphic novel. Luckily I’ve been in the mood to read volume two of ‘Unfamiliar’ by Haley Newsome, because the first volume was such a cute read.


The fifth prompt was a book you bought used, which is easy since I’m a book buying addict. I am choosing ‘The Silent Patient’ by Alex Michaelides, since it is going to work perfectly for a readathon which I’ll be taking part in this month. All I know about the book is that it’s a thriller that people seem to really enjoy.


My sixth spin gave me the prompt a book with a map. Now I should not be starting any new series, but most of the books I have that contain maps are starts of series. So, with my husband’s help I chose ‘A Curse So Dark And Lonely’ by Brigid Kemmerer. All I know is that this is the start of a trilogy, and it’s also a Beauty and the Beast retelling.


My seventh prompt was a book published after 2015, which is most books on my TBR. I’m going to put ‘Two Twisted Crowns’ by Rachel Gillig back on my TBR, since it was another February book that I wasn’t able to read.


Prompt number eight was to read an author’s debut book, which is amazing. I really wanted to get ‘Powerless’ by Lauren Roberts on this month’s TBR. If I am not mistaken, this is her debut novel, and apparently it’s heavily inspired by ‘The Hunger Games.’


The ninth spin gave me one that was most recent purchased, which again, is easy for me. I decided to pick ‘The Bone Witch‘ by Rin Chupeco. This is the start of a gothic fantasy series that I haven’t seen anyone talk about. I’m interested to see if it is any good.


The tenth and final spin landed on the prompt a book with an illustrated cover. I’m happy to get this prompt, because I don’t have much romance on this TBR. So, I picked ‘The Deal’ by Elle Kennedy, since my copies of this series are the illustrated versions. I am very intimidated by this series, and just hoping that I love it.

Series I Need To Finish // 2024 Update

Hi Friends,
Let’s talk about some book series! Specifically, book series that I need to finish. I have started so many series, but never seem to keep up with them. Seriously though, I’m actually hoping to finish some of these before the end of the year. Now that might be a bit of an ambitious goal, but a girl can dream.


The Babysitters Coven by by Kate M. Williams
I read the first book last year during the fall, and I still need to get to the sequel, ‘For Better or Cursed.’ I believe this trilogy is completed, but I will most likely only be able to pick up the second book before the year ends.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
This is a duology that I actually cannot wait to finish. I gave ‘These Violent Delights’ five stars, so I have high hopes for ‘Our Violent Ends.’ I haven’t heard a lot of people talk about this duology much, but I think it’ll become a favorite of mine.

The Book of Tea by Judy I. Lin
The first book, ‘A Magic Steeped in Poison,’ ended on such a cliffhanger, that I have to read ‘A Venom Dark and Sweet’, soon. The only problem is that the first book was very slow-paced, so I’m worried that the sequel will be as well. However, the plot is super interesting and will keep you intrigued.

The Legendborn Cycle by Tracy Deonn
I just need to bite the bullet and pick up ‘Bloodmarked’, which is the sequel to ‘Legendborn.’ I have heard that it is even better than the first book. For me, this was one of the books that kickstarted my fantasy reading journey. However, these books are chunky, and have a lot of world building. Still, they are fascinating, and I hear that we get a love triangle in book two.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
This is a series I started this year, and since the first book is fresh in my mind, it would be nice to read the second book soon. I never thought I was a pirate book type of reader, but I’m loving this storyline. I am interested to see where the next book takes us.

Letters Of Enchantment by Rebecca Ross
It is shocking to me that I haven’t picked up the second book in this duology yet, since I loved ‘Divine Rivals’ so much. Honestly, I’m just scared it’s going to put me in a reading slump. However, I am intrigued to see how this love story places out and get back into this world.


The Shepherd King by Rachel Gillig
The first book was a roller coaster. There were times I was loving it, and times where the plot seemed to drag. Still, the duology has such an interesting plot that I need to see how it concludes. I would like to read it soon, because I’m worried I’ll start forgetting the first book.

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
It is embarrassing how long it has been since I’ve read the first book in this series. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to finish these books, but I need to simply binge them. I remember a lot about book one and enjoyed it, so it’s about time to finish the rest of the books.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
I am happy to say that I am well on my way to finishing this series. I have one book in the original series left, but I do have the two novellas and ‘Midnight Sun.’ By no means do I love this series, but I am enjoying it.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This is an older young adult dystopian trilogy that pretty much everyone has read by now. I have yet to read the second and third book, which is such a shame. I am dying to see the new film, but I would like to read the book first. However, that means I need to read the original trilogy first.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Not going to lie, I didn’t enjoy the first book in this YA trilogy. I understand that it’s on par with ‘The Hunger Games’ for best YA dystopian series, but I wasn’t that big of a fan. Yet, I do hear that the second book is really good. So I am planning on finishing the series this year and maybe read the companion novel, ‘Four,’ as well.

The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill
This is a graphic novel series that I should have no problem reading. I have two volumes left to read, and I cannot wait. It is such a cute, cozy fantasy that is very easy to read. I am sure that I will enjoy the last two books as much as I did the first.

Weekly Reading // February 19th – 25th

Hi Friends,
I usually do Friday Reads posts, but I thought that I would change it up and do a weekly reading post. I’m going to be talking about the books that I hope to read this week. On my TBR for the month, I have mostly just the fantasies left to read. But, I’m not sure I’ll actually get to any of them before the month is over. However, I do have big reading plans for the week.

Everyone Who Can Forgive Me Is Dead by Jenny Hollander
I’m 30% into the book, and hoping that I can finish it soon. The book is pretty slow, but it is a thriller that I am enjoying so far.

Betting on You by Lynn Painter
This is an anticipated read for me, which means it is crazy that I haven’t read it yet. This is on my TBR for the month and it should be a fairly quick read. I typically love Lynn Painter’s young adult books, and I’m expecting this one to be no different.

Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong
This is the one fantasy from my TBR that I would like to actually read this week. I read the first book back in 2022, so I need to get this duology completed.

I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by Ann Liang
This is tentatively on my TBR for the week because the audiobook is available on Libby soon. If that hold comes in, then I will most likely pick it up.

My Rating

I wish I could say that this book was a roller coaster ride, but unfortunately, I predicted the ending twist right from the first chapter. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I really like the mixed media element. In the book, we follow a group of experts in their respective fields, such as journalism, psychology, and detective work, starring in a television show to solve a cold case.

The Director of the show has a true connection to the murder, as the victim was his stepfather. The story dragged a little bit too much for my liking. I felt as though the chapters were too long, and I kind of figured where they were going with the plot. Now there were some moments that were a surprise to me, and I really liked the format of the book.

I can’t generally say too much about the characters, because there are a lot of them, and we didn’t get to really know them personally. However, I thought that case that they were looking into was very interesting, and I liked working with them to put the puzzle pieces together and figure out what happened.

“True crime reality TV, if you like. Judging by the cliffhanger at the end of last night’s opening episode, it certainly shows promise.”

In a way, the book really makes the reader the detective as well, which I think is a very unique concept. As for the ending, like I said, there was no big shock there but I think the author took a lot of time with the plot and wrote everything to make sense at the end.

Overall, I would’ve liked the book to be about 100 pages shorter, yet it was a decent read, and I think a lot of mystery readers could really enjoy this book. Honestly, I think it would make a great book club read, since you could get together and try to solve a crime.

5 Star Predictions #5 // 2024

Hi Friends,
I have done some 5 star prediction posts in the past, and a lot of the time I do not actually get around to reading those books. However, this time around, I have picked out 10 books that I believe will be read this year. If you are not readers, a five-star is the highest rating a reader will typically give a book, meaning that I predict these books will be new favorites of mine.

The Comeback by Lily Chu
Last year, I read ‘The Stand-In’ by this author, which was a five-star read for me. Therefore, I hope that I will also enjoy this book. I do not particularly know much if anything about the plot, but since I have given this author a high rating, it is a pretty safe bet that I will again.

What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall
I have heard a lot of great things about this book and the premise reminds me of ‘The Night Shift’ by Alex Finlay, which I loved. It is an adult thriller that involves a serial killer and possibly a false conviction. I feel that this book will be full of twists and turns, and I cannot wait for it. It sounds like a book that I will love.

Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams
If this is not a five-star book or possibly a favorite book of the year, I will be completely shocked. I am almost certain that I will love this book. Although I did not love my first read by Sarah Adams, this book contains two of my favorite tropes: exchange of services and bad boy, good girl. I know that it is going to be a fun read.

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
I have been highly anticipating this adult thriller, and I am hoping that I have not built it up too much in my head. The plot follows a blogger and two cold cases, but the awesome things is that Simone St. James thrillers have a paranormal aspect to them. I am a lover of the ‘The Conjuring’ movies, so I am always down for an interesting and fast-paced paranormal thriller.

The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
I am a huge fan of stories with magic and witches, and I have been loving plots that have a historical fiction feel to them. Therefore, this book sounds like it is going to be an engaging read. Henderson is the author of ‘House of Hunger,’ which I found to be such a compelling read. I have no doubt that this book, which I have heard is their most popular, is going to be fantastic.

Maybe Meant to Be by K. L. Walther
This is a contemporary young adult story that sounds like it is going to be a lighthearted romance. The plot follows two teenagers and best friends who everyone believes are destined to fall in love, but they are both interested in different people. This is another author that I have read from and given four stars previously, so I would like to think that their books will keep improving in my opinion.

Gilded by Marissa Meyer
This is a YA adaptation of Rumpelstiltskin, which I cannot wait to read. Truthfully, I have not heard many people talking about this book, but as someone who loves a retelling and the story of Rumpelstiltskin, it sounds like something I will devour. I am going into this book completely blind, but with the mindset that it will be an amazing read.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
There are many mixed opinions on this book. You either love it or find it okay. I am all about cozy fantasies lately, so I think that if I was going to rate it a five-star, this would be the year. I have heard that the romance is not the best, but the plot sounds interesting, and I could really see myself having such a good reading experience.

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Unfortunately, I was not a huge fan of ‘Legends and Lattes, ’ since the plot was not as enticing as I would have liked. However, I think it had to do more with the writing style than with the story. Nevertheless, I think this prequel novel will be much more for me. It still has a cozy fantasy feel, but with a more highstake plot. I would love it to be a five-star read for me, yet I am still unsure about it.

The Deal by Elle Kennedy
I hear that this book not only has the exchange of service trope, but also a spicy hockey romance. Need I say more. This is the first book in a series of companion novels set on the same college campus, and I have heard that all of the books are great. However, this one sounds like it will be my favorite and most likely to be a five-star. The plot sounds great and I am always up for a steamy romance.
