Sims Readathon 2024 // To Be Read

Hi Friends,
Today I am doing the first of many TBR posts this month. I will be participating in the Sims Readathon, which is hosted by Ashley (@OfFictionAndFantasy) and some amazing co-hosts. This is a yearly readathon that typically takes place in February, but was moved to March this year. It is a month-long readathon that is centered around the Sims line of games. Since my husband is a bigger Sims player/gamer in general, I love doing the readathon. This time around, I was sorted into Team Wolff. Audiobook Subscriptions // My Recommendation

Hi Friends,
Today is day 3 of Bookmas, and I thought that I would share with you my top three favorite audiobook subscriptions. I solely read audiobooks because I simply prefer them, so I am pretty well versed in the world of audiobook subscriptions. Since it is the holiday season, you might be thinking about gifting someone in your life one of these subscriptions. So, I am going to let you know the pros and cons of each, and my personal favorite.

Audible
Let’s be real, this is probably the most popular audiobook subscription since it is a subsection of Amazon. However, that doesn’t necessarily make it the best audiobook subscription.

Pros
Amazon Originals: They have a catalog where you can find a ton of free audiobooks.

Audible Exclusives: This is great for someone that reads a lot of indie authors, because they have a lot of indie published books on audible, such as the Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy.

2 For 1: Every month they do a two for one credit sale where you can get 2 audiobooks with one credit.

Cons
Price: A subscription is $14.99 a month, which is pretty high compared to other subscriptions.

One Book: You only get one audiobook a month and with the price it isn’t much different than buy the audiobook without committing to a subscription.

Everand (Perviously Scribd)
This is a subscription I’ve had for years although I don’t use it that much. Not because it’s bad, mind you – I used to not enjoy the app, but I do think it has gotten so much better.

Pros
Price: For being just $11.99 it’s pretty much a steal.

Unlimited Books: This is different than other subscriptions because you don’t get one audiobook a month. You get access to their catalog of audiobooks and can listen to multiple ones a month.

Ebooks: The cool thing about ever is that the subscription includes ebooks as well.

Cons
Slow App: Honestly, I find the app to run a bit slow. This isn’t a huge issue, it’s just something that can be a bit frustrating at times.

Limited Access: The most annoying thing about this subscription is that they limit access to certain books. They market the subscription as unlimited books a month but if you read a lot in one month they will lock your access to certain popular or trending books until the next month.

Rakuten Kobo
This is an audiobook subscription that I haven’t heard many mention. But, it’s one that my mom uses all the time.

Pros
Price: They have a few different plans but the most recommended is $10.99.

Cons
One Book: Similar to Audible you can only redeem your monthly credit for one book.

Purchasing: The worst thing about this subscription is the app. Mainly, the fact that you cannot purchase any book through it. You must go online using your desktop computer to purchase any audiobook.

So, which of these would I recommend? Personally, I would say that Everand is the best audiobook subscription for your buck. Friday Reads #15

Hello Friends,
It’s time for another Friday reads post! I am going to try and finish a few books this weekend, but as always this is a flexible weekend TBR. I might change things up depending on what my Libby app has available on Audiobook, but I like having options.

‘Furyborn‘ by Claire Legrand
I’ve been reading this book for months and still just at 30%. It’s a YA fantasy that is apart of my 12 Book Challenge.

‘A Magic Steeped in Poison‘ by Judy I. Lin
I’m like 4% into this young adult fantasy, but so far I am loving it! I’m really going to try and get this finished but the end of the weekend.

‘With and Without You‘ by Austin Siegemund-Broka and Emily Wibberley
I’ve read every YA contemporary released by this author duo. But, I have yet to get to their release from last year, which is about two teens trying to navigate a long distance relationship.

‘Icebreaker’ by Hannah Grace
I posted a poll on my Bookstagram account voting on what ‘smutty‘ book I should read and this was the winner. Guess, I’m going to be seeing what all the hype is about.

Those are the books that I’m planning on picking up, but I’ve been in the biggest reading mood lately. And, right now I want to read everything especially fantasy series. Before you go, hit the follow button to get notified whenever there’s a new post.

Read More Books // Tips and Tricks

Hi Friends,
In the past, my reading wasn’t where it is today. Here’s a little secret: in 2020, I only managed to read 5 books. In 2014, sadly, I only read only 2 books. Until recently, the most I had ever read in a year was 15 books. However, 2021 was a turning point in my reading. I was able to read 50 books. I thought that I would share some of my tips on how to read more books in a year. Now, this isn’t a guide on how you can read 100 books in a year. And, these tips might not work for you. But they did help me in my effort to read more.

Reading Time
One of the biggest tips is to set aside a time to read. If we can be on our phone for hours, or watch a two hour movie, then one can certainly read for an hour a day. Pick the best reading time for you, and give yourself a goal of reading for 30 minutes or an hour.

Finish The Chapter
This is something I do often. I will pick a chapter that I want to get to and won’t stop reading until I reach it. It’s like a little competition with yourself, and once you reach your goal chapter, you get a feeling of accomplishment.

Audiobooks
I think this is a no-brainer when it comes to reading more. These days, I solely read audiobooks and I am not embarrassed by that fact. This has improved my finished book count and reading experience significantly. There are many audiobook services to choose from; even libraries offer audiobooks.

DNF
I am trying to get better at this, but DNFing can be very beneficial. Continuing to read a book you don’t like can put you in a reading slump that could last for weeks, or even months. This can hinder your reading a lot. You shouldn’t be ashamed to put down a book that you aren’t into. Reading should be fun, not a chore.

Book Clubs and Readathons
Something else that helped my reading grow was participating in readathons. One of my first posts happened to be a TBR for a ‘Taylor Swift’ inspired readathon. Joining that event kicked off an amazing year of reading. Book Clubs are another great option, since it will motivate you to read at least one book a month in order to engage with other book club participants.

Coffee Break // Audiobooks Aren’t Real Reading

Hi Friends,
I have wanted to do this post for a while now, because it is something I am extremely passionate about. Is listening to audiobooks ‘reading’? I used to be the type of person that would hate on audiobook readers. I would think it was cheating, and not real reading. However, fast forward 10 years and 100% of my reading is done via audiobooks. Zero regrets. I completely understand people that cannot get behind audiobooks, and have to physically read. Just like anything else, audiobooks aren’t for everyone, and it does take some getting used to. I know that a lot of people believe that you aren’t truly ‘reading’ if you go the audiobook route. But I don’t think that’s really true.

I watched a lot of videos on this topic, and one of them put it very well. In the video, by EmmmaBooks, she posed a question – that if someone drives themself to work, but their co-worker takes the bus, did one of them cheat? Or take the easy way out? The person that drove themself isn’t going to call out their co-worker for taking the bus. They both got the same results, but took different paths to get there. In the debate of audiobooks versus physically reading, you are both consuming the same work, just in different forms.

I am a multi-tasker with serious ADD, which makes audiobooks perfect for me. I can accomplish other things while reading. Also, it is like TV in my head. Oh, the days of radio shows. Best-sellling author Stephen King even did a short video, declaring that “audiobooks are terrific”. They are especially great for people who have learning disabilities, that would otherwise struggle with reading. I am forunate enough to be able to read well, but I do still get frustrated when there isn’t an audiobook version available. Authors that only release physical books are missing out on sharing their work with a whole new dynamic of people.

In my opinion, the whole point of reading is to open your mind to a new world and a new group of people, to bring the story to life. You can do that regardless of whether you listen to the audiobook or read it in print. I would certainly never think less of the people who choose to listen to audiobooks, and I love the fact that all readers are different. but can still come together and share a love for books. I will always advocate for audiobooks, and if that makes me not a real reader, then so be it. Remember – you do you, and enjoy reading any way you please.
